Lineage 3? Not yet!
March 28, 2008Interview with NCsoft’s new President, Chris Chung.

“During our talk I was able to get the scoop on the NCSoft game line up: how the last year went, and what’s planned for the future!”
Lineage… III?!
No, not yet – but soon! Chung told me that NCSoft’s main concern was assembling the right team to tackle this project. Said Chung, “This is the year that we are assembling that team.” On the Lineage II front, the recently release Kamael expansion has done very well, bringing many players back to L2 to try out the new race.

July 26, 2007July/2007
NCsoft representative Kim said, “It is true, I was shocked when we had to stop the development of Lineage 3 in May; However, we are going to start all over on January, 2008. We are going to put all of our online gaming technology we’ve earned through the past ten years into this project.” He then stated, they will NOT be using the Unreal 3 Engine, but creating their own.

The interruption of Lineage 3 development! Part 2
April 30, 2007Police are investigating a suspected theft of software code for online game “Lineage III” which is being developed by Korea’s largest game maker NCsoft. The Seoul Metropolitan Police said Wednesday that seven former NCsoft employees are suspected of having sold the technology to a major Japanese game company.
The seven left the Korean firm in February and allowed the Japanese company to review the software during a job interview. Police believe that the technology might have been copied during the demonstration.
The former NCsoft employees are also under suspicion of having leaked the program design of “Lineage III” by email or portable disk last September.
According to police and industry insiders, the game company has suffered from an internal management problem since a senior game developer was fired for poor leadership skills.
But the sacking only led to greater problems for the company, since most of developer’s 90-member team quit with their chief.
An NCsoft spokesman estimated the potential damage at over W1 trillion (US$1=W927) considering that the combined sales of “Lineage I” and “Lineage II” topped W1.5 trillion.

Lineage 3 Development: Pause!

Jaeho Lee (NCsoft Vice President)
02/2007
NCsoft is planning a summer closed beta for the upcoming MMORPG ‘Aion’.
In a conference call on February 7th NCsoft’s CFO Jaeho Lee revealed that the company is preparing for “the first Aion closed beta test to be held this summer”. Lee added that “the closed beta tests will occur with the goal of having the open beta by the end of the year.” ‘Aion’ is currently in internal testing phases within the company.
- Lee also made an official comment on the standing of their other MMORPG project, Lineage 3. Lee made known to the company’s foreign investors that “the Lineage 3 team has been reset”. The decision was made after “5 days of intense meeting and discussion”, during which it was concluded that the project lead Yonghyun Park(Lineage 3’s Project Manager) would be dismissed and the project itself put on hold. “We will bring together a new team for the project and get it back on track as soon as possible” said Lee, “Aion and other projects will not be affected by this in any way.” An employee at NCsoft added that they are “not sure if the designers that were working on Lineage 3 will remain with the project or if they will be moved to other projects.”
Tack jin Kim Declaration!
February 6, 200702/2007
“We’re going through very difficult times”
These heartfelt words uttered by NCsoft’s CEO Tack jin Kim last year at a Culturual Exploration meeting say much about NCsoft’s current situation.
* Tack jin Kim (NCsoft President)
More than one MMORPG a year!
So is it realistic for NCsoft to release one MMORPG a year?
Yes, is the short answer, and then some. 2007 is slated for the launch of ‘Aion’ and ‘Tabula Rasa’. ‘Tabula Rasa’ has already started recruiting closed beta testers, and ‘Aion’ is currently in internal testing. Hints from NCsoft’s employees say that ‘Aion’ is coming together faster than expected. The game will enter the closed beta stage before summer of 2007 arrives in full.
- Lineage 3, The next release in the Lineage series, is aimed for a 2008 launch. (Note: This has presumably been delayed due to the recent dismissing of Lineage 3’s Project Manager)
Also in the plans are 3-4 other MMORPGs of various genres including one based on martial arts.
Although it remains to be seen what kind of success these planned MMO games will draw, it certainly promises a constant output of products from their development staff. An employee of NCsoft confessed that “there was a lot of restructuring in 2005-2006 because of concerns over infrastructure” and reassured that “this process is now complete and you will see us back in production mode”.
This year marks the completion of a successful decade for NCsoft. As they prepare themselves for further growth in the new year it will be interesting to see what changes this brings to the industry as a whole.
Lineage 3 News!
November 28, 2006
11/2006
“The developers are working hard to present a higher level game world in Lineage III for the audience. They are learning dancing in order to make moving characters more natural . They invite make-up artists to deliver lectures for them in order to express more accurately the differences between eastern faces and western faces. Recently, they took nearly 10,000 background photos in Korea and some European countries in order to present vivid game environments.”
L3, Interview: Director Kim Chi John!
November 8, 200611/2006
As Lineage 3 is under development in the Headquarters of NCSoft in Seoul, Director Kim Chi John takes a moment to share what he envisions for the world of Lineage 3.
Lots of races are promised, says Kim, you’ll get the typical races as well as some surprises. Human races, Elf races, Speed Races. These are the characters our users have come to know and love throughout the 86 year old heritage of Lineage. We’re going to put a lot of money into this project, Kim says, as he lights up a cigar with a wad of dollar bills. We’re going to make it accessible to children of 3, their parents and their grandparents. Everybody should play Lineage 3. Unless you’re playing Lineage 2 of course.
The last pleasant memory a man should have before he die is his last castle siege, ha-ha, Kim says jokingly. That is how Lineage should be a part of our lives.
Kim hopes to bring people together through his game. It doesn’t matter who’s on the other side of the computer, because even though a person’s friends and guildmates are fat, Lineage will help them see beyond their physical appearance. Fat girls will get married too, because they’re pretty elves in the game. Kim stresses that the avatars will be highly detailed, with realistic body physics. It will be just like real life, only with monsters you can kill, Kim promises.
If one is worried that this will be a strain on most modern computers, NCSoft will offer computers for rent. People will pay through their noses and be forever in debt to us. This is good because we can always go to the next generation of players to collect our debts. This game will never end, Kim says with passion, this game is eternal!
With Kim’s megalomaniacal drive working with the obsessiveness of Asian people, it is no doubt that Lineage 3 will be the best game anyone with the exception of North Koreans has ever played.

“ See my hairline receding as I make Lineage 3. That’s the result of my hard work.”
Lineage 3 the boom of MMORPGs!
April 11, 200604/2006
‘Lineage 3’, expected to spearhead the boom of MMORPGs on the heels of ‘Lineage’ and ‘Lineage 2’, is now under development at the NCsoft Studio in Korea. No more details have been publicized yet except for the fact that the game will be an extension of the same episode shared by other ‘Lineage’ series games. ‘Lineage 3’ will be unveiled with much pomp and circumstance in the first half of 2007.
